Earlier today

What's the “hidden engine” in a leaf?

G’day. Ask me about your crop, your program or anything in the wiki, and every answer shows where it came from.

Manganese. It sits at the heart of photosynthesis, where the leaf splits water: sunlight powers the split, and the water gives up the electrons the leaf uses to make sugar. Run short and the leaf makes less sugar from the same sunlight.

As Steve puts it: “one thing to take home today: photosynthetic efficiency and manganese.”

How often should I sap test?

One sap test is a single number. Steve's question is how it's shifting: the trend across a run of tests tells you what's changing.

A test every few weeks across the season joins up into that trend. Take new leaves and old leaves side by side, so you can see what's moving where.

Line tests up ahead of each stage, so there's still time to act on what they show.
