By the end, you’ll…
- see which lever a program is pulling: yield, quality, or both
- count profit at the packing shed, not the weighbridge
- work out what a kilogram costs you to grow
“Yield is not necessarily the profit, it’s the recoveries on the yield.”
Episode 1 · Farming for profit
Take home
Profit is counted at the packing shed: recoveries and cost per kilogram, not just tonnes.
Try it on your farm
- Pull last season’s grading figures: what share made it through?
- Work out what a kilogram costs you to grow.
- Ask of every input: which lever is it pulling?

Two levers.
Most people concentrate on the problem they have. Steve pulls two levers, because the money is in what makes it through grading.

Yield, and quality
Yield is how much you grow. Quality decides how much of it makes it through the packing shed and gets paid for. A program that only chases tonnes can leave the money on the grading table.
“If I can’t make them profitable, they’re not going to be here next year.”
So the episode ends on one number: what a packed kilogram costs you to grow. Set beside what it earns, it tells you whether a program paid for itself.
